California was the name of a region and state that was, at varying times, part of both the United States of America and the United Republic of North America, and, in the 19th century, a short-lived country of its own. It was located on the southwest edge of the continent of North America, near Mexico to the south, and during the existence of the USA, bordered by the neighboring state of Oregon to the north.
California possessed a fairly hot climate, largely comprised of arid deserts and temperate woodlands. In the north of the state, however, rainy and even snowy weather sometimes occurred. Some of the biggest cities in North America where located in California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, and San Diego.
